Monster Bashing!

Monster Bash went very well, HRC miraculously put it together in about an hours time. While we had some minor issues (The fog machine making the fire alarm go off for 20 minutes), it was still a good time! Luke, the disciple; Kasey the Ninja
Priyanka the racecar driver, me the hippy!
Chad was an awesome DJ/Spartan warrior.
These girls danced it up all night( Oh and Chase) ! Cool costumes!
My favorite mobsters!
After the Bash all of the wings rushed to finish decorating their respective lounges for the Halloween decorating contest. Sass fell asleep, poor thing was exhausted! But... I couldn't resist a picture.

David shows off his kitty cat costume.

I f you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball

I can not stress enough how many opportunities we have as students on campus. Some of the freshmen decided to start a dodgeball club and they've recruited tons of students to take part in the chaos of the game, here are some fun pics I took.

Intensity

Colin and Alex are ready to attack!

Yay Labuda! Loud and proud!

A Tribute To Highschool

My friends and I grew up in a village of about 2,000. I've been visiting high schools lately for work and for class and I've been sorta missing my friends! It's pretty hard to find ways to entertain yourself in such a small town, here are some things that we did to pass (waste) the time. A Million Ways To Be Cruel, OK GO! (Yeah, we probably spent like over 20 hours rehearsing this) CSI: New Athens (This took a long time too..)

October Fun

The count down to Halloween night is on, where will you be that weekend?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This week has been pretty intense for all students on campus. In addition the stress of midterms, scheduling classes for spring semester and keeping up with work and organizations, "Assassins" began this week. This is a game played in LRH where participants draw the name of their target. Each person has a tube sock and must wear it at all times, assassins wishing to "kill" their prey need only to steal the sock. However, participants are given safety boundaries in their own rooms as well as the Food Emporium and classes. I myself did not play this year, last year was way too stressful, I was always looking over my shoulder wondering... Not cool.
In other news, my intramural sand volleyball team won the championship last week and we will continue our reign for indoor volleyball next week! Also, Preview Day was last Saturday and I thought it went really well, there were many students who ranked UIS at the top of their list. Anna and I gave a tour to about 40 people, try fitting that group in a dorm room... it's pretty tricky. It was really interesting to be on the other side of the spectrum, no longer the prospective student, I was the one answering countless questions and trying to soothe the worries of many parents. It was really funny to see how embarressed the prospective students got when their parents would talk, hahaha. Yeah, I've been there.
After Preview Day I headed down to Camp Cilca in Sherman for the 2West Service Learning Retreat. It was nice to get off campus and walk through nature. I was running late so I missed the Challenge Course that my fellow volunteers did. They told me what kind of things they did to improve their trust in one another as well as teamwork. There was canoeing, and some odd sorts of challenges that required group collaboration .
In addition to the team building excercises we played games, discussed volunteer opportunities in the area and events that we will hold this year for Service Learning. Hunger and Homeless week is coming up and there will be a Hunger Banquet (more details to come) as well as opportunities to go down to Washington Street Mission and serve food to those in need. If you're interested in being apart of Service Learning or just want to help out with an event contact, SStine1@uis.edu.
The Homecoming Parade, Mice and Cheese
Here are some pictures from the Homecoming parade, the student ambassadors worked hard on the car to make it look like a mouse. The theme was an a-Mazeing Experience.
The Beginings of Greatness
Our boss, Kathyrn, got silly stringed by the kids, our honorary student ambassadors for the day.
Emily and her twin came out of the trees to help us. Lol. They seriously just came from nowhere and started helping, so we naturally adopted them. The ears were pretty tricky.
We got it together though! A job well done.
We would never let the cheese stand alone. Thanks for helping out Ben!
What does UIS have to offer?
This Saturday is the first Preview Day at UIS, providing a great chance for prospective students to visit campus, get answers to all of their question and to get a super amazing tour, given by me! Lol, I'm still sort of training for this, so I hope it goes well! I look forward to meeting my future peers. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I look at this blog as a fun place for current students as well as prospective students to have a little over view of what UIS is really like. To see and experience it through the eyes of a current student is extremely important to those considering attending this university and I really want to utilise my blog to help influence that decision. I applied and was accepted to the Capital Honors Program my freshman year. I had no idea what that entailed and discussing it with my classmates recently I learned they didn't really know either. The Cap Program is a specific curriculum, mandating all of it's students to be enrolled in 2 years of a foreign language, BioChem and the classes "Who Am I?" "How Do You Know?" "What is Good?" and "What is Power?" If you are not familiar with these classes you're probably wondering what material would possibly be covered in these courses. Well, each section offers a different set of texts for the semester, each with the goal of answering these questions.
There was a freshmen Symposium for our "How Do You Know?" class last year, which was really cool because we got to utilise everything we learned and compete for a $200.00 prize.
My team worked very hard on our presentation, "Media During the Cold War, the Tripod of Disciplines." Professors love when you incorporate metaphors in anything :-) That's "Team Amzing" reheasing for the 3rd hour straight in my room, lol.
Oh yeah, we won!In my studies I have read Plato, Confucius, Sarte (not my favorite), Aristotle and many more. I felt that some of my classes were more worthwhile than others, but the Honors Program is truly what you make it. As an English major I really do love the concept of these classes, they really value the idea of class discussion and debating ideas with fellow students. They influence leadership, self-cultivation, creativity and the ability to challenge authority. There are some concrete benefits to Cap as well, you are assigned a peer mentor to help you adjust to your first year of college and to advise you on whatever you are stuggling with, you get a free laptop and scholarship opportunities as well. Below is my first Cap project for "Who Am I?" We got to do whatever we wanted to show our professors what we're all about, I chose to express mysel through this video.
