GOV candidate Roland Burris "may have finished dead last"
in the Dem primary, but "at least he's used to it." Burris has
lost "six times in 10 attempts" since '76, and he said this was
his last race. Burris: "I'm done, and it's very easy to say
that." Burris said he was "relishing the thought of leaving the
rigorous campaign trail." Burris: "It's unbelievable what you go
through, what you put your family through ... I'm just going to
go on with my life and enjoy what little life I have left"
(Mihalopoulos/Becker, Chicago Tribune, 3/21).

Paul Vallas for Governor 2002

Meanwhile, while the other Dem candidate Paul Vallas has
said "he's not interested in running for political office," some
think he would be an "appealing" candidate for Senate in '04.
Vallas: "I like public service, but you can remain in public
service without running for office." Given Vallas' "surprisingly
strong second-place primary showing as a first-time political
contender," he may be "at a crossroads." Roosevelt Univ. Policy
School Dir. Paul Green: "If he's going to strike, he has to
strike now, because he impressed a lot of people inside the
party last night." Some have thrown Vallas' name around as a
possible candidate for mayor, but Vallas said "absolutely not --
ever." Spokesman for Dem primary winner Rod Blagojevich, Doug
Scofield, said he would "definitely consider" Vallas or Burris
for a spot in his administration.

On the GOP front, LG Corinne Wood is "half-seriously"
considering penning a book about "being the first female
Republican to take on the boys and run for governor," according
to her spokeswoman Tressa Pankovits (Rossi/Fusco, Chicago
Sun-Times, 3/21).
